jordan baker wrote an article in the sydney morning herald called "Selective school fail: Why NSW has lost control of the beast it created" wherein 2 former education ministers were saying they want selective schools to be abolished. But is this actually realistic? Do u think it will really happen?

They definitely need to get rid of "opportunity classes" what a waste of tax payer dollars, it's fucking primary school - it's not that deep. You aren't even learning the most fundamental topic and the basis of all high school math, algebra. these "opportunity classes" It's just a way for these "nerds" to feel like they are smarter than the rest of the school with their retarded 11 year old brain capacity. By useless I mean oc classes are fucking useless. And for selective schools, it literally doesn't boost your hsc performance at all, you're literally using the same textbooks and resources. Selective schools only exist to seperate "dumbs" and "smart", which doesn't even matter if the subjects you're doing aren't for dumb people. Selective schools are also very racist, with LITERALLY ZERO DIVERSITY, everyone is either a yellow or brown poc. Also if selective schools never existed and everyone sent their children to normal schools, the normal schools would drastically have better hsc performance. Imagine a normal school has 50 band sixes per year, and there are 50 kids who are in the catchment area for the normal school but go to selective instead. If they all went to the normal school, that would be atleast 100 band sixes per year for that normal school.

I might be biased because I go to a selective school but I think they are not as bad as people make them out to be. I left my old school in year 9 because of relocating and joined this selective school in year 10 so I didn't do the year 6 selective school test, but the actual test to get in wasn't stressful at all. The overall study environment in the selective school is so much better, everyone is actually focused on their work and they want to do well. At my old school, there was only about 5 of us that actually cared about doing well, which meant the teachers didn't really bother teaching concepts in depth.

Also I agree w the person that said they should get rid of the opportunity classes. I literally didn't even know that was a thing in primary school until I talked to ppl at my selective school. What a fucking stupid thing lol, it kind of insinuates that the kids not in the class don't get opportunities????

omg same!
i joined selective in yr 10 and lowkey its not bad
but since i go to a partially selective school its different,
the only academic environment is within the class and the rest of the grade/school do not give a fuck they are the reason our school rank and nb of band 6s are so low
its also rlly annoying bc my school doesnt get any extra funding from the government (despite it being 'selective') bc its in a low socioeconomical area and (according to myschool) 51% of all students are from the lowest social class – most of my friends (not selective) cant even afford to buy the uniform, they burrow secondhand
the only 'rich' kids (rich relative to the main stream) are selective, about all of my classmates have parents that own a 6 bedroom house lmao

honestly if they want to get rid of selective schools they should get rid of the partially selective schools, its just a waste

now there are letters some for and some against the abolition. here i think is the best one:

Jordan Baker makes many valid points about the problems of selective schooling. However, there are other aspects to this issue that should also be acknowledged. If it is acceptable for the government to provide selective schools for sporting and performing arts excellence (both of which are quite intensely coached), then why not for academic ability? Many selective schools offer study in specialist disciplines not available within the local comprehensive system, particularly in languages. The principle of providing enhanced educational opportunities for those who might benefit from it most has been a significant part of civilisation since Plato and Aristotle. It is not invalidated by overambitious parents, nor because the current authorities might have bungled its implementation. - David Salter, Hunter’s Hill

bro instead of getting rid of selective schools they should use to their time to get rid of the English course and create a completely new one lmao.
they need to make it optional, since math is even though math has more applications than english literature we do in the hsc. It's optional in Queensland and Western Australia for English to be factored in atar calculation

yes. Like I actually want to sign a petition to make English not count towards our atar. Cause It's kinda too late for my grade if they make it optional but at least don't make it count towards our ATAR. I desperately want this to happen and if it does I will be throwing a party for the whole fcking week

Does it even matter. Remove selective schools the distribution will just find its way back to what it was. I think its funny that he makes the claim that kids are moving to selective schools because of their "language" programs. But realistically, by effectively removing selective schools you will just incentivise parents to reside in the catchment areas of top schools. It just doesn't work. You can't just remove the title "selective" and take away the barrier of entry (selective test) and call it a day. That school will be still recognised as a "high level" school. And with HSC rankings that exist it doesn't really help.

I mean you see it with public schools such as CTHS where I see quite a lot of immigrant parents send their child there when they are not able to go to selective schools (due to late transfers). Because its the "next best option" and these parents know this. And like almost every "pre-requisite" primary school like Carlingford West public whose demographic looks oddly similar to the selective school of James Ruse down the road.

Whilst I don't really side with removing or maintaining the selective school system, I think what they are trying to fix is a lost cause in a ruck that they put themselves into.

Imagine if robotics was a subject! or game dev 😲 or practical mechanics
I would love that. I would choose that any day over English. Like I feel like they actually need to make new subjects that has practicality in life. Like maybe accounting or more of the tech stuff or even how to do your taxes and invest properly. Even vic has like visual communication and psychology which I would love to do
