I did my HSC in 1986 and I always wondered about my school assessment marks. I was ranked 1 in my school for physics, chemistry and French. Why was my school mark lower than my exam mark?

This is very interesting, especially considering that moderation was first implemented in your HSC year. 🤔

if multiple people share the same internal rank how does the aligned mark work? e.g. if 5 people came 5th internally do they all get the same 5th highest exam mark?? and if so how does that affect the people below them? like would there be "unused" exam marks

Yes, the students ranked equal fifth would all receive an Assessment Mark similar to the fifth highest Examination Mark. Regarding your other question, I am not entirely sure of the technical adjustments that may be made, although NESA does state that it does consider special cases when moderating, meaning that they are familiar with such possibilities and can address them while maintaining the quality/effectiveness of the moderation process.

question!!!!

for internal assessments, how tf do they even calculate cumulative ranks?? like how was i ranked 2nd in both assessment task1 and assessment task2 and now my overall cumulative is 1st ??
I thought it’s just the weighted average of all the assessments that have been completed and the rankings are derived from that

maybe it was different person rank 1 and u just came out on top
This is a possible explanation. Consider the following example involving 3 students: gossipgirllll, Student A and Student B, and 2 equally weighted tasks.

StudentAssessment task 1 performanceAssessment task 2 performanceCumulative rank
gossipgirllll
90% (rank 2)
90% (rank 2)
1st (based on 90% average)
Student A
95% (rank 1)
75% (rank 5)
2nd (based on 85% average)
Student B
65% (rank 5)
95% (rank 1)
3rd (based on 80% average)

While gossipgirllll placed 2nd in both assessment task 1 and 2, her performance was consistent, as opposed to Student A and Student B, who performed well in assessment task 1 only and assessment task 2 only respectively. She therefore had the highest average performance in her cohort and therefore placed first.
