Hi everyone,
I’m currently in Year 12 (2026 HSC) and I accelerated maths this year. I just received my marks:
  • Maths Extension 1: 46/50
  • Maths Advanced: 93/100
I’m considering whether Maths Extension 2 is worth taking next year. My main concern is that it might negatively affect my overall ATAR
Any thoughts or direction on this would be appreciated.:)

judging by your username, you like maths! which is already an indicator that extension 2 is worth taking.
not only that but those marks are AMAZING!
a good performance in ext 2 will surpass even a high band 6 in advanced, (which is important to take note of since your ext 2 result will count and not your advanced to your atar) so in my opinion, i see no reason to not do it.
it's also a very fun course imo :)

impact on atar:
- difficulty of 4u not a concern if you get above 80 (as above) which you are clearly capable of based on those marks.
- doubles your good 3u mark as a 46/50 roughly equates to a 99.1 atar contribution = good idea to have this count for 2 units instead of 1 (whereas the 93 in advanced goes to 97.3 for atar)

should you take it?
- if you love maths, absolutely. 4u is one of the most rewarding subjects, difficult and requires effort, but so worth it
- however, it will take time. If dedicating that time to your other subjects (not sure how your load is looking) is gonna give you a higher reward, do that
- you can always drop it later, someone in my class dropped right before the trials bc they decided it wasnt worth the time commitment for hsc.

As someone who took mx2 over the previous year, I would say do it. Tbf my school didn't accelerate subjects, so I had to do the content of advanced, ext1 and ext2 at the same time, so I'm not sure on the workload difference vs doing just ext2 but it'll definitely be lighter.

It is very unlikely to negatively impact your atar due to its scaling and the very achievable hsc mark of 80 would beat out your 93 in adv and also double your good ext1 result.

As for the actual subject, if you love maths and put time in, the content is very enjoyable, I would say I liked it better than maths advanced and, depending on your degree, much of its content will feature in first year uni maths, making that much easier for you (My entire maths for first semester is in ext2, so I will probably have an easy time there)

I had that same mark in ext 1 and 91 in math adv (did 0 papers and didn't bother learning finance) in 2024 and I comfortably e4ed ext 2 this yr. IMO this subject is so much more nuanced and interesting than e1, adv. Reason being is that theres no annoying perms and combs and it delves into a the more creative sectors of the hsc courses that nesa provides. I highly suggest you give it a go.
