im getting around 70s in 3u math (currently top 5 in my class) and i dont struggle w it at all, but recently it has been confirmed that my school is not running 4u class bc only i wanted to do it and since then ive been considering of dropping it

cons: its too much effort, i have to wake up at 5:30 to get to class on time, its just one unit, might not even contribute to my atar
pros: i think i can band 6

also i havent really done much studying for it and my prelim starts on the 22nd, which is very less time if i have to balance out my other subjects (that im also worried abt)

im thinking of dropping it now before prelims, but idk
any suggestions?

firstly that is infuriating your school isn't running a class, at my school there is only 3 now 1 kid in ext 2 and 2 in ext history. Surely you can get some kids to sign up for first term and quit half way through?!

But otherwise, do you actually enjoy the subject? That should be the key concern, because hopefully enjoyment outweighs the effort. But I think too maths ext can also help your mathematical ability in general, also boosting your adv marks in the long term. Also I see you do physics, physics + ext/adv go well together in terms of overlapping content, so the better you get at maths overall the better youll probably do in all 3 subjects.
What subject were you thinking of dropping if not ext?

Also for the record I do Biology, physics, chem, 3 unit english, maths ext and maths accelerated .

i wanna drop physics thats why im considering dropping 3u
but the thing is sometimes im too focused in ext i forget to put in the effort for adv (eg my AT2 for adv was a 66% bc i was putting in effort for 3u)

If you drop Physics it should give you ample time to make Adv more of a priority, as Ext should not be sucking that much time out of you. As long as you do the respective textbook questions for Adv each day you should be fine. but once again if you're not passionate about maths/maths ext, then, it might be best to drop.

hmm aren't you thinking of becoming a high school math teacher tho
it'd be good to complete ext 1 then, since you'll encounter much tougher math in studying for that

If I was in your position I would definitely drop considering you are top 5 with only a 70% and your peers don't seem interested in MX2. This could mean that they are finding MX1 hard and it will be hard for you to get e4 in anyway considering you are borderline e4 for MX1 plus that time spent in MX1 is probably better spent in other subjects such as math advanced or any other 2 unit subject you are not particularly doing well in.

but tbh some kids might not want to to mx2 even if their doing well. Like there's this kid in my grade who's doing accel and she's getting like full marks or one off in her advanced and ext exams and she doesn't want to do ext 2. There's also a bunch in her class that are doing well and still don't want to do it. But also @jane1820 is there a way u can do mx2 via distance education or smth. Idk if it will be good but maybe getting a tutor to help u too if u really want to do mx2. In my school there's also like only 1 kid who wants to do mx2 so she has to do it online where they combine with other schools to form an online class

I get what you are trying to say but In general if there is no MX2 classes in a school they are stastically shown to have lower results. Most schools that get an e4 in ext 1 maths also do ext 2 and get atleast e2-e3 for MX2. And plus @jane1820 is already worried about her english adv especially if she is getting 66% since 3u might not count but english most def will so she should drop(it's in her best interest) pick up marks for English and improve other 2u subjects such as maths advanced make sure you gurrantee yourself in getting a band 6 for it.

No my school gets like 5 e4’s a year and like only 1 or 2 people at most do mx2. But yeah if it’s taking her too much time then yeah it’s best to drop. But 70% in ext 1 isn’t even bad

Again thats for your school. I am talking about majority.
Yeah but maybe it’s the same in other schools. Cause isn’t like a 70% in ext 1 like close to an e4 and if she’s top 5 that means that there def should be multiple people getting an e4 meaning that it doesn’t necessarily mean that their getting low marks and might have the same situation as my school but idk

very hard to know without school rank but not many schools I know of don't do mx2 and that is generally alarming cause in lower ranking schools this is common.

yes thats what im thinking of doing, like why waste so much time on 3u when i can put that time for my other subjects

But also @jane1820 is there a way u can do mx2 via distance education or smth.
i already considered that and spoke to the head teacher of secondary studies abt it
the thing was that i told them last week and applications close this week and they only had 14 days to do the application which isnt enough bc they need money and the director's approval (the principal's boss) so i just opted out of it

this yr the class of 25 dont have a 3u or a 4u class but class of 24 got 3/4 e4s for 4u math and 7/13 e4s for 3u which is very impressive lowkey

the difference in our marks is like 1 mark difference for everyone, the highest in the latest exam was an 81% were i got a 73% [there was a 5 mark difference between us but in between everyone had a 1 mark difference]
this actually is another reason im worried abt dropping bc since the standard deviation is very low the chances of me getting affected by ranks is also very low idk

my schools rank is 300-something
but even then we got the most band 6s from the math faculty especially in the math advanced level (or so ive noticed since 2020)
