Chemistry scales way worse than physics in terms of raw score -> scaled mark, the statistic that actually matters

People think chem scales better just cause it looks like a 90 HSC mark in chem is the same as an 88 HSC mark in physics. What they don't know is that the alignment for physics is much much better.
Wdym? I never mentioned physics, ik it scales higher, doesn’t everyone

I think the reason chem scaling (raw score -> scaled mark) is fucking awful is due to poor quality cohort. Physics barely had a low quality cohort, yet chemistry does.

Yea nah I get that, chemistry gets a bunch more people than physics cause it’s a high science with less math/more theory or smth kinda like a higher scaling bio (which btw pmo so bad cause all I ever do in chem just goes back to math). But yea alignment outweighs scaling cause then it’s easier to reach break-even point

we're all dumb sorry 😞 😞
not you. I'm talking about the drop kicks who enroll in this class cause of "walter white" or sum shit. they barely scarped a band 4 in math advanced, thus negatively impacting the scaling of this subject.

UAC scales subject on the basis of candidature's performance in other subjects like math and english

LOL maybe it's a my school thing but bio is the one that bears the brunt of the people-who-should-not-be-there cohort, the vast majority of people who took chem in year 11 imo was capable of doing it

this is the whole "everything is aligned through english" thing right

Aligning through English is a thing? My school always aligned it to math. You weren’t allowed to take chem or physics if you weren’t in atleast Math Adv (not that it worked tho)

don't quote me on this, but since everyone does English, how well certain subjects scale/align is somewhat determined by the cohort's English performance, or something like that

I think the UAC scaling document/ATAR calculation document has more details but I'm a little foggy, sorry

Couldn’t find anything on it but if it is that’s a bit dumb and concerning for my class since a quarter of them are like fresh internationals
