Hi so I just want some advice right now. I feel so done with everything. I keep getting such bad results for maths, the one subject that my mum cares about. She sends me to a tutor for maths and has been spending so much money on me. Since year 9, after every maths common task, I have been telling my mum I will do better in the next one. That never happened and I feel like I just keep getting worse and worse. Today I got my half-yearly marks back for year 11. I got both ext and adv back and for ext I got 11/50 and for adv I got 13/50. I have no idea what to do. The common task before this which was in term 1, I also got rly bad and it was the first time I didn't tell my mum my marks and I felt horrible about it. I don't know what to do anymore and idk if i should drop maths or what to do. I have no idea how to tell my mum this one. I will literally get flamed, especially because I come from an Asian family. Help or advice or anything would be much appreciated. I cannot improve maths before year 12 I feel like.

Do u know why u aren't improving. Maybe try to figure out your weaknesses and why u are struggling with math and try to work on those. But if u can't and u don't see any improvement maybe drop to standard cause that will probably be the best choice. But it seems like u go to sghs so I guess u can't. If ur constantly struggling to understand math concepts and nothing is helping u understand it then maybe it is best to drop. Maybe drop ext first if u can so that u can focus more on adv and get ur marks up

The question is though... do you want to improve? and is math something you need in ur future studies?
if it's a no to both, then drop it.
Maybe drop ext first (if you can with ur units). And see if its an overwhelming issue with the amount of maths ur doing.

also are you doing any stem subjects? if you are, is the math part holding you back in it?

Yeah, I would say I defo want to improve and if I hadn't spent all these years on maths tutoring I would drop maths altogether. I can't because I feel like that would be wasting my parents money and it just isn't something I would be allowed to do.

That's understandable!!

can i ask if you've been going to one on one or to group tutoring sessions?

Honestly the issue is I just can't bring myself to study maths because I don't enjoy it. I think i'll try my best until year 11 ends and if I seriously see no improvement I'll drop to advanced

My tutoring sessions are in a group of about five people and I have been going to the same tutor since year 7. No matter how much I asked my mum if I could switch tutors, I wasn't allowed because apparently a lot of his past students did really well. I've accepted it and now I kind of just go for the sake of going.

do u not enjoy ur tutoring session? Do u think going to a different one could motivate u to enjoy math and do more math?

Honestly idekk they kind of teach like random topics but we have done advanced for both year 11 and 12
yeah that's shit, they are def not catering toward you specifically. There's no point in going ahead if you struggling with concepts from previous topics.

as jane said send us ur paper, i think we'll probably be able to help you understand ur weaknesses and possible help you improve

a good start could be reattempting the questions you struggled on + doing questions that are a similar style and difficulty
