hi im stuck between english ext and econmics for next year, and I was wondering if anyone who's done either or both could share some advice? my pros and cons so far are
english ext:
- i somewhat enjoy english and have done well in it so far (although idk if thats because the tests may be easy or if im actually good at it)
- i hate creative writing and struggle with it. i dont mind essays and analysis and stuff like that
- it could be helpful for skills in adv
- i like reading
- not really helpful for anything after skl and if i pick it i will most likely drop it before yr 12
- may be a really heavy workload considering i also want to do math ext and chem and physics

econ:
- i also enjoy commerce and do well in it
- may be helpful for potential future pathways like actuary
- apparently theres a lot of content. is it mainly rote learning?
- also most likely the subject i drop for yr 12 unless i end up hating another subject

any advice or insight into these subjects?

you wont have problems doing a rote learning subject such as economics if you like reading and writing essays.

Also you don't actually have to do economics if you dont drop any of the following: chem and physics and maths ext 1 and 2

doing both would be 14 units and i think thats too many

I'd say only pick extension english if you REALLY like english and you have thoroughly enjoyed it in your junior years! I'm not doing either myself but just some advice, as four units of english is a lot, and that would warrant a lot of study time!

i mean i enjoy english but not like my other subjects so idk. but that also goes for economics (commerce currently). would the 1 extra unit of english require the same amount of work as the 2 units of econ?

do english ext. i did it last year (and it wasn't for me, so i dropped lol) but if you like english, its easy to do well in.
i don't do eco, but it sounds terrible from what a lot of people are saying. you alr do very intense units, so don't tax yourself too much:)

From what I’ve heard eco can be a lot but a lot of people I know really enjoy it. Only pick Eng ext if u enjoy it cause or else it will be a pain. But I think just choose what u think you’ll enjoy more. Personally I wish I picked eco

So I currently study economics and I think it's pretty fun. Your right, it does have quite a bit of content, but it can be pretty enjoyable.
I have to say though, I feel like a lot of people in my grade find it difficult to have an interest in studying the subject unless ur already somewhat passionate about it and are willing to listen to a lot of content/explanation surrounding the economics topics. I would also say that its a subject that I feel like you would need to constantly stay on top off and revise regularly to help familiarize yourself with the content being taught.

I took commerce last year and I was taught about demand, supply, the business cycle and the 5 sector model etc., but rlly that's only just a tiny bit of what economics is about. Of course, what you learnt in your commerce class could be totally different to what I've learnt, but what I'm saying is, (if you haven't already) maybe checking the nesa syllabus in detail will help you figure out if the content for economics and English ext that you could be taught for the next 2 years interests you or not.

thats so true! its like 10% of what its like irl and tbh thats what i find 'enjoable' about economics
but then again its truly (hehhehehe truly by cigarettes after sex) about your passions

from what I've heard, both of those subjects are ones you either love or drop - so as long as you're aware of that, then do whichever! creative is unfortunately a mandatory part of ext eng and may comprise a lot of your assessments though so be wary haha

i do agree that some of what you learn in e1 will help your adv theory wise but mostly its just the skills imo which you could also get from just doing more practice BUT I FEEL LIKE IMO ITS ALSO REALLY TEACHER DEPENDENT IN E1... and for eco there is indeed a lot of content, not so much rote learning but you need to genuinely have a deep-ish understanding of the concepts. i think if ur allowed to take 14 units at the start then you should just try them both out and drop the one you dont like after like a term

i think in year 11 it depends on ur school but ur gonna do at least 1 creative for 1/3 of the terms. and in year 12 for rhe hsc you do one creative w reflection and one analytical so its deffo more than you would do in adv relatively

but also you have to do some sort of creative for english advanced anyways so it could be good practice

doing english extension without liking creative writing is not a good combo. also when picking hsc subjects u don't need to consider career pathways (apart from the obvious like prerequisites and assumed knowledge). hsc is probably the last time u will get to study whatever u want without any consideration of career so study whatever u think you'll enjoy the most and do best at. in the end all that matters is ur atar. i'm doing law without having studied legal studies, and comp sci without having studied sdd or ipt

what I’m trying to say is that from your description of both you’ll enjoy neither, so why don’t u use those extra units to do something enjoyable

i mean based off what my skl offers i would consider either eco english ext legal or sdd and based of those 4 im mainly more interested in eco and english. i think i would enjoy both except the creative part of english ext. ill most likely do eco because of that or ill ask if could do 14 units for a little just to trial it
