Hi everyone,

I’m currently in Year 10, doing Mathematics 5.3, and my average so far is around 72%. Next year I’ll be moving into Year 11 Mathematics Advanced, and I’m starting to think about tutoring to prepare myself for the jump in difficulty.

I feel like I have a decent understanding of the Year 10 5.3 content, but I also know that Advanced in Year 11 is a big step up, especially with topics like functions, calculus, and trigonometry being much more demanding. My goal is to build a stronger foundation now so that I don’t fall behind when the content gets tougher.

I’ve heard a lot about Dr Du tutoring, and I’m considering it, but I’m not sure if it’s the best choice for my situation. From what I know, they have a very structured approach and move quickly, so I’m wondering if that’s good for someone at my current level, or if I’d be better off with a tutor/centre that focuses more on individual explanation and guidance.

If anyone has experience with Dr Du (especially coming from a similar mark range), or if you know other good tutoring centres/individual tutors for Year 11 Advanced Maths, I’d really appreciate your recommendations. I’m mainly looking for something that can help me improve my results, but also make sure I understand the concepts clearly rather than just memorising methods.

Thanks so much for your help!

Are you doing advanced math or ext 1? Dr Du is very diluted for 2U. I wouldn't recommend just from general observations.

based on your situation, a private tutor that can work through content with you after you learn it in school sounds better - honestly, if money is tight, you might not need a tutor at all! consolidating information, for me, was pretty okay with textbooks and practice questions (but math does come quite instinctually to me, so take this with a grain of salt)

I personally am not a fan of the huge tutoring centres but that is my personal bias - it does have its pros, and if you go to a selective then it might be worth it if only to not fall behind the curve

I would apply for extension math if and only if math is something you actually enjoy, otherwise it is worth it

as for preparing yourself, I remember I had a look at an HSC paper to brace myself for the sorts of concepts - I also learnt differentiation early but that was sort of out of circumstance and is completely unnecessary
imo investing in a good textbook is worth more than a tutor, but everybody learns differently
if you are genuinely worried about it then I would recommend finding a way to look through content early - ask a friend in a higher grade for worksheets from their early year 11 content and see how well you can grasp it
also be prepared for a shock in marks, but do not be concerned because math adv does scale

Iam not a huge math fan, right now iam considering math adv

And the think is, that our school is really behind on covering math topics and right now I got Project Academy and it's decent but the only problem I have is that they give the home work on a iPad and me I'ma just lazy to get up get the iPad out and pull up the questions, but a proper hw booklets would properly motivate me to do the work and thus I can have a full understanding of the topic but now since they don't give it hw booklets I rarely do the hw so I am not getting a deep understanding of the topic there teaching.

And since I am going into yr 11 math adv I don't won't just go to Project learn the theory and procrastinate the hw on the iPad cause i won't properly understand the topics. So iam looking for a change.

Also we had a test and after we got our results the teacher went through the questions with us and I was able to do all of them. For me, I feel like I understand the topics taught really well, but when it comes to the actual tests I just struggle under exam conditions. I think it’s more about timing, past papers and exam pressure for me rather than not knowing the content.
