I'm so damn confused by the scaling, I know y'all just discussed it but like, is the HSC mark we get back different than the mark that affects our ATAR???
yes! basically, there's alignment, which determines your HSC mark for a subject. this is the thing on rawmarksdatabase, as far as I can tell. this whole process is done by NESA.

your ATAR is calculated by UAC, which has different values, and is where traditional "scaling" comes into play - i.e. how hard or easy a subject is. this is determined by a cohort's relative performance across all subjects, and uses the raw mark given to them by NESA to calculate an aggregate that they then internally use to rank everybody. remember, the ATAR is a percentile system!! (people forget a lot so I thought I'd put a reminder)

it sounds weird but makes more sense when you realise the HSC and the ATAR are run by two separate organisations for their own individual purposes - NESA only cares about graduating qualifications, whereas UAC attempts to transform these results into something universities can use for comparison in the admissions process.

honestly i would have loved to do DT if our schools teacher wasnt hella controlling and also like having to do millions of portfolios and "evidence of planning" like i did it for a couple terms and fell so far behind because she wouldnt let me work on my idea without drawing specific flow charts for her despite having detailed multi page google docs and CAD files as evidence of work (also was going to be my 7th major work at the time so theres the other reason i dropped)

I remeber being in a like products business comeptition thing and our group made biodegradable silcone and bamboo based bendy straws that were only 13% more expensive that commerically bought bulk plastic straws. We had prototypes a logo and everything. we lost to a colander with a bowl underneath it (not attached) so you could wash things and save the water...

that's so sad that you lost but simultaneously so cool that you made it in the first place...does this mean we can replace the annoying paper straws soon please they keep disintegrating in my drinks
