as for metrics i really don't care, a mid battery life and good touch screen is all i need

In that case go for Microsoft Surface Pro Copilot+ PC 12" X Plus 16GB/256GB Platinum
$1,497 at Officeworks. That will give you 8 hours battery life, a very bright high-res screen, and good touch sensitivity.

Short answer, No. There are no mandatory software products in the Engineering Studies syllabus, however your school may require you to use Trimble SketchUp to satisfy the requirement to experience using CAD for drawing. SketchUp will run in a web browser so no problem for any recent Macbook. There are some 3D printers that only have software for Windows.

Get a refurbished Dell latitude on eBay, they'll run you about $150-200
